Some of you may have heard about the new film by the name of The Imitation Game that was released in November of 2014. It stars the Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, whose role in the film earned him many nominations for awards including the Academy Awards.
This film is a biography of Alan Turing, focusing on his life during the World War II. The film highlights Turing’s role as a British cryptographer in breaking the Nazi’s coded messages during that time. The film is meant to showcase the brilliant work of Alan Turing and his accomplishments during his lifetime, as well as tackle concepts of sexuality during the 1940s.
This film is interesting because Alan Turing is someone we’ve talked about a lot in reference to artificial intelligence and the Turing test. Some people hypothesize that the name of the film alludes to the invention of the code-breaking machine being the first step in creating a device with similarities to human intelligence. Interestingly enough, Turing’s research about the Turing test and the differentiation between human and machine was published after the Second World War. This movie provides an interesting window into the life of a man who has helped create a framework for technology today.
