Last week, Snap Chat released their new Discover feature that may reinvent the way younger generations get their news. The Discover feature presents a mix of media organizations from CNN to MTV, People and Bleacher Report. With this addition it seems as though Snapchat is making a move to shed their sexting, youthful image for a more flexible, diverse social media like Facebook and Twitter. Media analyst Ken Doctor reckons Discover “challenges Facebook as a supplier of news” and Snapchat’s value will grow incrementally for media companies. However, some of my friends on campus do not think as highly about the new feature.
When discussing the new feature, my peers all seem to agree that it is difficult to navigate and doesn’t give them all the news and information they want. These complaints and issues are easily correctable. From my perspective, this idea will change the way our generation gets our news. In addition, I believe that this feature will make Snap Chat more appealing to older generations. Before this can happen, I think Snap Chat may want to add a few more media outlets/ organizations that appeal to broader age groups. While the current list is diverse, it really targets their dominant 13-25 age bracket. It will be interesting to see the direction Snap Chat takes the Discover Feature.
